About Our Company

Jacinto Lopes Baeta, Filhos Lda, is a family business, established as a company in 1938 by the sons of the founder, established in Sintra since 1898 as a wholesale and retail food merchant.

In the 1940’s the great development of society was achieved, creating new branches of business, including wine, and a cellar was built in Sintra, with a total capacity of 397,000 liters.

In December 1988, the winery “Viúva Gomes”, founded in 1808 and perhaps the most renowned brand of the famous wines of Colares, with an area of 1,164 m2 was acquired in Almoçageme.

At this moment the main activity is the bottling and trade of wines, from various regions of the country, mainly Colares.

We intend to extend the offer of products (wines and spirits) and at the same time continue the promotion of the wine tastings that we make at the Adega de Almoçageme, within the scope of the Rota dos Vinhos.

 Our Service

Since 1998, in addition to the commercialization of wines, it has started the reception of groups for courses and wine tastings, as well as meals, in order to promote the region’s wines and make known the old facilities of the Adega Viúva Gomes.

In the area of the Adega Viúva Gomes wine cellar, we conducted wine tastings from the region of Colares, with the possibility of comparative tests with wines from other regions of the country, such as Alentejo, Dão, Douro, Oporto or Moscatel.

There is also the possibility of accompanying the test with solids

For this purpose, part of the Wine Cellar was reserved, which was decorated with old material, existing on the premises.

The winery and office building was built in 1808 by the Gomes da Silva family, who came from the region of Loures, which had extensive vineyards and later also sold wine from the region of Colares.

Around 1902, the widowed society of José Gomes da Silva & Filhos was founded, directed by his sons Bernardino and Ludgero Gomes da Silva.

In 1920, the building, business and brands were acquired by the Companhia de Vinhos e Azeites de Portugal SARL, in the person of António Soares Franco Júnior, administrator of the firm José Maria da Fonseca Sucessores Lda, a company to which all the estate passed in 1926 .

In 1931, the Winery was acquired by Vitor Guedes & Companhia, Sociedade Comercial, whose social designation was changed in 1962 to Vitor Guedes-Indústria e Comércio SARL, which in the 1970’s stopped marketing wine, partly due to the marked decrease in production And also due to the social and labor problems existing at the time in Portugal, reason why the whole existence was bottled, remaining in aging.

Initially the wines were produced in Almoçageme and wagon leaving for Praia das Maçãs, where a warehouse existed. They were loaded in wagons that were attached to the tram until Sintra, then proceeded to Lisbon by train.

In 1988, the Winery and all its existence was bought by the Baeta family, established in Sintra in the food business since 1898, owner of a winery in Sintra, and the commercial company Jacinto Lopes Baeta, Filhos Lda remained in the possession of the whole existence, initiating A new phase of commercialization of the wines, creating and bottling new harvests of wines of Colares,In order to reestablish the reputation of the Viúva Gomes brand.

From that time began the recovery period of the facilities, purchase of new wood barrels and recovery of existing ones, with a total capacity of 105,000 liters.

In 1998, a space was created at the Winery for wine tastings and various events, as well as a small store for the sale of all bottled and tasted products at the Winery.

The Viúva Gomes Wine Cellar is part of the Bucelas, Carcavelos and Colares Wine Route

The connection of Colares to wine is lost in time, but it is known that at the time of the Roman occupation wine was already made in this region, later, in 1230, King D.Afonso III, handed land to the nobles in the condition of implementing the cultivation Of the vineyard.

The region of Colares became famous in the late nineteenth century, more precisely in 1865, when it fell on world viticulture its greatest threat, phylloxera.
This tiny insect from the Americas began to arrive alive in Europe when the duration of travel was reduced due to the introduction of steam engines on the boats.

Interestingly, the vineyards of the Colares region were the only ones that resisted phylloxera, since the insect attacked the roots of the vineyards and did not propagate in the sand because of the depth of the roots, which sometimes reached 8 meters.

Throughout Europe, except for this region, American (insect-resistant) plants have been used, grafted with European varieties.

In the vineyards of this Region, cane palisades are used to protect it from the sea winds due to the proximity of the sea. The characteristics of the terrain and the microclimate of this region, where the temperature differences between winter and summer do not exceed ten degrees centigrade, do not allow a high degree and give it an unmistakable flavor.

The wine produced in the sand fields is the famous Colares de Chão de Areia wine, it has the right to the name “DOC-COLARES” and the variety Ramisco in the red and Malvasia in the whites, have a minimum representation of 80%.

The vineyards planted in the clay lands give rise to the “Chão Rijo” wine, which is entitled to the denomination “Regional Estremadura”.
